Thank you for your service

As a US Army veteran I have heard “Thank you for your service” so many times.  I’m always at a loss of what to say when someone says this to me… ughh Thanks, or here lately I have just started saying “Thank you for saying that”.

It’s just weird and I”m not sure why? Maybe it’s because I”m an introvert and hate being the center of attention.

Maybe it’s because some veterans dont’ see it as service.  Some veterans or active duty members just see being in the Army as a job.

I joined the Army back in 1996 right out of high school because I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. The only thing that I was sure about, was that I didn’t want to go to college.

I joined long before September 11th 2001, so there was a chance of us going to war to serve our country, but it just wasn’t likely.

People that joined after September 11th, those are some of the people that I think of deserving of “thank you for your service” Those people knew that we were going to war and wanted to do their part in serving their country. Obviously, I don’t mean to leave out veterans of the World Wars, The Korean War or the War in Vietnam.  September 11th is just what I can relate to since I lived it.

She was such a bad ass

She was such a bad ass

Not gonna lie, this blog post started as an “about me” blog post. Intention was to allow people to get to know me a bit better.

So I was digging through old photos trying to find something I could use to help tell the story.

Then I came across a couple photos of my grandmother. May she Rest In Peace.

My grandmother was a force to be reckoned with, to put it lightly. She was the most bull headed and loving person I have ever known.

My grandmother raised me for about 95% of my upbringing and she has probably had the largest influence on making me the person I am today. For better or for worse.

Not sure what happened, but I was a cute kid..

Not sure what happened, but I was a cute kid..

She was a hard worker her whole life, that could seemingly do anything. From small engine repair to minor construction. She would also play catch well in her late 50s with her spirited grandson. This woman could do it all!

She never missed a little league baseball game (unless she was working).  She gave me unwavering support throughout my life.  For that, I am eternally grateful.

As I get this Wedding Photography business off the ground and I run into snags and resistance, I think to my self…what would Granny do?

She had that never give up attitude that was infectious.  I never met a person that didn’t just love my grandmother….or her Sunday dinners!

Maybe one day I’ll get back to writing the “about me”  post, but for now.  This is a very small thing to express what she meant to me and the impact she had on everyone around her. She left us to early and I’m so sorry I wasn’t able to be there in the end.

When she died in 2003, I was in Kuwait getting ready to take a long drive to Baghdad, but more on that in a future post.

Oh and while I’m here, take photographs of your loved ones and PRINT THEM!! We didn’t take photographs often growing up that I remember and now I wish we did.  So many things are lost and photographs I know would snap me right back to where I was whenever the photograph was taken…

Please don’t let photos of your loved ones die on a smart phone.

If you made it this far into the post…Who shaped or molded you into the person that you are today?  I would love to know.  Comment or send me an email or DM…

Thanks for stopping by.
