Year in review | Fayetteville, NC Wedding Photographer

Wow where to start, 2018 was kind of a big year for me. The biggest thing that comes to mind was that I retired from the Army.

I’m a retiree!

but I’m not that old, on to my second career!

After 22 years and 26 days I competed my service. I can say that it flew by, I know from an old timer that seems cliche, but it’s true. You can read more about it here if you would like.

I officially started my photography business!

That’s kind of big for me. I have been taking photographs for so long, but to finally put myself out there and state to the world “I am a photographer!”. I think thats kind of big, even if I say so myself.

I would like to think that I’m being brave, I have put myself out there, very vulnerable in my eyes. Success or failure all resides on my shoulders. I’m the CEO-Owner-Marketer-HR rep-publicist-office manager-creative director-advertising person-copy editor-graphic designer-oh and free lance photographer of the business.

Chase Jarvis (Bad ass photographer- entrepreneur-person I look up to) would say we are all “hyphens” or we must be capable of doing a lot of things to be successful in any field, especially a creative field.

I have learned so much over the past year. I have learned about myself, about business and about photography.

I have read books…ok I listened to books. Books about learning my “why”. Books by Simon Sinek <<<Highly recommend anything this guy does. I have learned about vulnerability by Author Brene’ Brown, in her book “Daring Greatly” <<< Another great book. My most recent find is @Garyvee on all social platforms, he is my business coach, in a sense. He has a 4 or 5 NY Times best sellers on Business and marketing. He is an all around bad ass.

If you are not a reader you should just check out some youtube vids of these folks.

Simon Sinek -BAD Ass TED Talk

Brene’ Brown- Another Bad Ass TED Talk

For GaryVee, there is just to much content on any Social Platform, google him or search “GaryVee” and you will get more than you bargained for.

All of this info is to say, I have continued to better myself through education in 2018, at least I think I have.

Of course for Photography I’m always learning new techniques and pushing myself to constantly improve.

A big inspiration of late has been the work of Sam Hurd and the work of The Mann’s out of Canada. These folks are Wedding Photographers out of DC and Canada. Their artistic style and the way that they capture the wedding day has been an inspiration to me and moving forward the way I capture a wedding day will be shaped by these great artists.

Before I close this blog post out and share some of my favorites from this year, I also want to thank Montana Burkett of Montana Burkett Photography. She has given me many opportunities of the past year and I have learned so much from her, I’m very grateful for her generosity.
